Nicotinic acid

A water-soluble form of vitamin B₃ (niacin) essential for the biosynthesis of NAD⁺ and NADP⁺, coenzymes involved in cellular energy metabolism and redox reactions. Nicotinic acid is used to prevent and treat niacin deficiency, including pellagra. At pharmacological doses, it modifies lipid metabolism by reducing triglyceride levels and increasing HDL cholesterol, partly through activation of HCA2 (GPR109A). Its lipid-lowering use is now limited by adverse effects and the lack of additional cardiovascular benefit in many patients receiving contemporary therapy
